Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Substation Engineer II - Physical to join our electric substation design team in Minnesota.

You will design projects from 12kV to 500kV, applying NESC/NEC/IEEE and other standards with increasing independence. You will develop plans, layouts, and conduit routing while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and clients to ensure safe, compliant, and constructible designs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 2–5 years of relevant experience in substation or related power engineering.
• Ability to apply engineering principles with limited supervision.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining quality and reliability.
• Effective communication and teamwork with stakeholders.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Project).
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification (preferred).
• Experience with transmission, distribution, or substation projects (preferred).
• Familiarity with NESC, IEEE, ASCE (preferred).
• Experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting tools (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Support substation physical design projects with guidance from senior staff.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to develop design packages.
• Prepare substation design deliverables: layouts, plans, and conduit routing.
• Apply engineering principles to field data and provide practical solutions.
• Perform grounding, lightning protection, and bus fault studies as needed.
• Create equipment specifications and bill of materials.
• Ensure designs comply with codes and client requirements.
• Coordinate with internal disciplines to align design elements.
• Communicate with clients and stakeholders to resolve issues.
• Assure quality control and adherence to standards.
• Help with procurement, submittals, RFIs, and site visits.
