Job summary

Westwood Professional Services seeks a Substation Engineer II - Physical to join our electric substation design team in Minnesota. You will design projects from 12kV to 500kV, applying NESC/NEC/IEEE/ASCE standards and producing plans, layouts, and BOMs as part of a multidisciplinary group.

You will grow technical independence, perform analyses, and support procurement, field visits, and client communications. Westwood emphasizes safety, sustainability, and professional development.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited B.E. in Electrical Engineering required.
• 2–5 years of substation or related power engineering experience.
• Ability to apply engineering principles with limited supervision.
• Strong communication and multi-tasking skills.
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Project).
• Experience with design and drafting tools such as AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

• Support substation physical design projects with guidance from senior staff.
• Collaborate with engineering, drafting, and project management teams.
• Prepare design deliverables including layouts and cable routing.
• Apply engineering principles to interpret field data and develop solutions.
• Perform grounding, lightning protection, and bus fault analyses.
• Calculate station service and DC system requirements.
• Develop equipment specifications and BOMs for major substation equipment.
• Ensure designs comply with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ASCE.
• Use engineering software to develop deliverables and docs.
• Coordinate with multiple internal disciplines.
• Communicate with clients and stakeholders during design reviews.
• Perform quality control and manage multiple tasks.
• Support procurement, RFIs, and field visits.
