Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC, is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to join the Acute Inpatient Rehab team. The extern will work with an RN partner, provide patient care, and gain hands-on experience during a 5/24–7/31/2027 externship period.

Requires enrollment in a prelicensure nursing program and upcoming graduation within 12 months, High School Diploma, and BLS certification. Role is onsite with standard 36 hours per week and rotating schedule.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs; frequent standing/walking.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to a nurse.
• Provides routine direct patient care under supervision.
• Assists providers during examinations and with equipment as needed.
• Reinforces routine teaching to patients and families.
• Supports RN partner and early learner onboarding on the unit.
