UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to join the Acute Inpatient Rehab Unit. This temporary full-time externship offers hands-on experience under RN supervision, working with a caring, interdisciplinary team in a 36-hour work week.

The role emphasizes learning in a clinical setting, collaboration with nursing staff, and patient-centered care. Enrollment in an accredited nursing program and a valid BLS certification are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months time from the start of student nurse externship.
• Nursing Assistant I certification/licensure required by NC DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Fluent in English (verbal and written).
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. frequent standing/walking.
• CPR may be required during patient care.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes.
• Aids patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs routine nursing tasks as per plan of care including vital signs, measurements, and specimen collection.
• Provide direct personal care for activities of daily living.
• Maintain and restock supplies, clean work areas, and assist in orientation of new staff.
• Reinforces patient teaching and documents understanding.
• Assist providers with routine exams/procedures and equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, supports behavior modification and safety measures.
