Job summary

UNC Health Care System is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position in a hospital setting focused on inpatient rehab services. The extern will work with an RN partner, perform nursing tasks within the Nursing Assistant I scope, and gain hands-on experience in patient care and teamwork.

The role emphasizes learning under supervision, participates in direct and indirect care, and supports patient education while developing clinical competencies for licensure readiness.

Qualifications

• Fluent in English (verbal and written).
• Ability to organize and prioritize patient care tasks.
• Basic computer skills useful for charting and documentation.
• CPR training and knowledge.
• Lift and carry 40–50 lbs; assist with patient transfers.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs routine nursing care tasks and patient observations as guided by RN.
• Provides direct and indirect patient care under RN supervision.
• Supports patient safety and assists in examinations and procedures as needed.
