Job summary

UNC Health Care System in Chapel Hill is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to join the patient care team. This temporary full-time role supports an RN partner within the prelicensure nursing program setting and operates under direct supervision.

You will gain hands-on clinical experience, assist with routine examinations and procedures, and participate in patient education and safety initiatives while completing your nursing studies.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in the delivery of patient care. Attainment and maintenance of unit-specific competencies.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
• Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
• CPR knowledge and/or certification.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or provider.
• Provides assistance to patients and their families during admission to the clinical area, orientation to the hospital/clinic/home health experience, and discharge.
• Provides care/treatments to patients as outlined in plan of care including vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, and basic nursing tasks.
• Provides direct personal care to patients for activities of daily living as outlined in plan of care.
• Provides indirect care such as cleaning, restocking, and assisting in orientation of new staff and students.
• Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the RN or provider and documents patient understanding of instructions.
• Assist providers and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and obtain equipment and supplies during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aids in safety, behavior management, and therapeutic milieu activities as needed.
