Job summary

UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus in Hillsborough, NC is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to join the Family Medicine team for a May 24 – July 31, 2027 externship. The position provides immersive prelicensure nursing experience, working with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

The extern will observe, document patient information, assist with admissions and discharges, and perform routine care under supervision.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.
Enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start of externship.
Nursing Assistant I certification required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Responsibilities

Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes.
Assists with admissions, orientation, and discharge.
Provides care per plan of care: vitals, measurements, basic wound care, ROM, etc.
Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living.
Supports equipment transport, stock, and room cleanliness.
Reinforces patient teaching and documents understanding.
Assists providers with routine examinations and equipment in emergencies.
