Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC seeks a Student Nurse Extern I for the May 24–July 31, 2027 program. The externship provides an immersive, prelicensure nursing experience under RN supervision within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

The SNE I works with an RN partner to learn practical nursing skills, promotes patient safety, and participates in routine care activities, documentation, and patient education while preparing for licensure as a registered nurse.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS.
• BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Provides routine direct and indirect patient care under direct supervision of a registered nurse or provider.
• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes to a RN or provider.
• Assists in examinations and procedures, procures equipment and supplies during emergencies.
• Assists in patient admission, orientation, and discharge, and supports patient and family education.
• Performs activities in plan of care including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and ADL assistance.
• Maintains unit housekeeping, stocks supplies, and supports learning experiences with RN partner.
