Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC, invites nursing students to participate in the Student Nurse Extern I program for May 24 – July 31, 2027. The extern will work with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice, gaining hands-on patient care experience in a 28-bed unit focused on post-surgical and GI-related care.

The role emphasizes learning under supervision, not performing restricted activities, with formal supervision by an RN and patient services leadership.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; enrolled in prelicensure nursing program.
• Nursing Assistant I listed and BLS certification (licensure) will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs routine patient care including vital signs, wound care, glucose checks, and basic treatments.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Performs indirect care: cleaning, stocking, transporting, and clerical tasks as needed.
• Reinforces patient instructions and documents understanding.
• Assist providers with routine exams and procedures as needed.
• In psychiatric settings, supports patients, participates in behavior plans, provides de-escalation and relative safety monitoring.
