Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for the 3 Neurosciences unit in Chapel Hill. This temporary full-time role supports RNs, working 36 hours per week with day/night rotating shifts and weekend rotation.

The SNE I will collaborate with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice in a psychiatric inpatient setting. The externship runs May 24 to July 31, 2027, and emphasizes applying nursing knowledge in real patient care, with supervision and a focus on patient

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy this requirement.
Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from the start of student nurse externship.
Nursing Assistant I listed; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Responsibilities

Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes to a registered nurse or provider.
Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge to the clinical area.
Provides direct and indirect patient care per plan of care, including vital signs, basic measurements, specimen collection, wound care, and activities of daily living.
Supports learning activities under the supervision of an RN partner and Education Leader in a psychiatric inpatient setting.
