Job summary

UNC Health Care System’s UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill seeks a Student Nurse Extern I for their Patient Services team on the Diagnostic Tower. This temporary full-time role provides hands-on nursing experiences under RN supervision, with emphasis on acute medical-surgical care and cardiology/hospitalist populations.

You will assist with direct patient care, learn essential nursing skills, and support the RN team in care coordination, safety, and patient education within a 36-hour work week,

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from the start of student nurse externship.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Provides assistance to patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides direct and indirect patient care including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and activities of daily living.
• Supports RN partners and other health care staff with routine examinations and procedures.
