Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for the 3 West Acute Care Cardiology and Nephrology Unit. This temporary full-time role (36 hours/week) is onsite with rotating shifts, working with an RN partner in the Nursing Assistant I scope.

You will observe, collect and document patient information, assist with admissions and discharges, provide routine direct care (vital signs, wound care, meals, mobility) and indirect tasks, and reinforce patient education under supervision.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from the start of externship.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and promptly report significant changes to a registered nurse or provider.
• Assist with admissions, orientation, and discharge of patients within the clinical area.
• Provide routine direct care including vital signs, height/weight, wound care, and basic patient care activities.
• Provide direct personal care (bathing, dressing, feeding) and assist with ambulation.
• Provide indirect care (cleaning, stocking, transporting) and support learning under RN supervision.
• Reinforce routine teaching and assist in patient education under supervision.
