Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for May 24 – July 31, 2027. The extern will work with an RN partner, providing care under supervision within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

Responsibilities include observing patient conditions, assisting with admissions and discharges, and delivering direct and indirect patient care with vital signs, wound care, and mobility support.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification listed with North Carolina DHHS; BLS certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to a RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide direct and indirect patient care per plan of care (vitals, wound care, mobility, etc.).
• Support routine examinations and procedures; assist with equipment and supplies during emergencies.
• Reinforce routine teaching and document patient understanding of instructions.
• Maintain clean work area, restock supplies, and assist in orientation of new staff and students.
• In psychiatric settings, assist with reality orientation and behavior support as applicable.
