UNC Health in Chapel Hill is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to join the 6 Medicine Specialty unit. You will work under an RN partner to perform patient care activities within Nursing Assistant I scope of practice, gaining hands-on experience in a 27-bed adult unit with telemetry and complex cases.

The role offers a summer externship (May 24 – July 31, 2027) under direct supervision, with emphasis on foundational nursing skills, safety, and patient-centered care in an inpatient setting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification with NC DHHS.
• Fluent in English; strong organizational and basic computer skills.
• Ability to lift 40-50 lbs and stand/walk frequently.

Responsabilités

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to RN or provider.
• Assist patients/families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and ROM exercises.
• Provide direct personal care for activities of daily living and assist ambulation.
• Maintain unit cleanliness, restock supplies, transport patients and equipment, and assist in orientation of new staff.
• Reinforce patient teaching and assist providers with routine exams and procedures.
