Job summary

UNC Medical Center's 6 Medicine Specialty unit is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for May 24 – July 31, 2027. You will work with an RN partner in the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice to provide patient care on a 27-bed adult unit.

This externship offers immersive prelicensure nursing experience, focusing on telemetry monitoring, routine patient care, and collaboration within a clinical team to enhance education and role socialization.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS and BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to RN.
• Provides routine direct patient care under supervision within Nursing Assistant I scope.
• Assists in admission, orientation, and discharge; supports bedside care and health teaching.
• Maintains clean/stocked workspace and supports equipment handling and safety.
