Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position in the Family and General Medicine unit as part of the 2027 program (May 24 – July 31). The extern will work with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope, gaining hands-on learning in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities include observing and documenting patient information, assisting with admissions and discharges, performing routine nursing tasks, and supporting patient and family education.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS and BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to a RN.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation and discharge.
• Performs basic nursing tasks as outlined in the plan of care under supervision.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living and maintains a clean, safe environment.
• Maintains proper documentation, supports education, and assists during examinations and procedures.
• Aids in patient safety and supports the therapeutic milieu under supervision.
