Job summary

UNC Health's 4 Neurosciences units are seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to join the team for the May 24 – July 31, 2027 externship. The student works with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice to gain hands-on patient care experience in a hospital setting.

Orientation is conducted in person and virtually, with a rotating day/night schedule and a 36-hour work week. This temporary externship is designed to supplement prelicensure nursing education and prepare students for

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in the delivery of patient care.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: push/pull patients on a bed or stretcher.
• Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
• CPR certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to a RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides care including vital signs, wound care, catheter care, glucose checks, and simple procedures.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living.
• Provides indirect care such as cleaning, stocking, and clerical tasks.
• Reinforces teaching and documents patient understanding.
