Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for a May 24 – July 31, 2027 session to join the patient care team under an RN partner in Nursing Assistant I scope.

The extern will gain hands-on clinical experience, observe patient conditions, assist with admissions/discharges, and provide direct care while developing foundational nursing skills in a supportive environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I listing with NC DHHS; BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to a nurse.
• Assist with patient admissions, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provide direct personal care and basic nursing tasks per plan of care.
• Support patient families and participate in safety and infection control practices.
• Assist providers and other health professionals during examinations and procedures.
