Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC, seeks a Student Nurse Extern I to join the Family and General Medicine team. Under RN supervision, you will assist with patient care tasks, observe clinical workflows, and gain hands-on experience in a hospital setting while enrolled in an accredited nursing program.

This temporary full-time externship runs May 24 – July 31, 2027, with a rotating schedule and 36 hours per week.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start date.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to a nurse.
• Assist with admissions, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provide routine direct patient care such as vital signs, hygiene, feeding, and ambulation under supervision.
• Support care delivery, transport, and supply stocking in assigned areas.
• Reinforce patient education and assist in exams/procedures as directed.
