Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC seeks a Student Nurse Extern I to support the Geriatric, Crisis Stabilization, and Perinatal Psychiatry Unit (4 Neurosciences). The program runs May 24 to July 31, 2027, with day/night rotating shifts and 24 or 36 hours per week.

Externs work under RN supervision to gain prelicensure nursing experience in a clinical setting. This temporary role includes orientation with an RN partner, direct and indirect patient care, and limited clinical responsibilities aligned

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care; maintain unit competencies.
• Basic computer skills as part of daily tasks.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information; reports significant changes to the RN or provider.
• Participates in identifying and reporting patient safety issues.
• Assists with admission, orientation, and discharge processes for patients and families.
• Performs care activities per plan of care: vitals, measurements, specimens, wound care, ROM, and basic therapies.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Maintains clean/stocked work areas, transports items, and supports orientation of new staff; performs routine clerical tasks.
