Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position from May 24 through July 31, 2027. You will work as part of a patient care team under an RN partner, gaining hands-on nursing experience within a hospital setting and under the guidance of Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

This immersive externship provides opportunities to learn foundational nursing skills, collaborate with RNs, and observe patient care in various clinical settings.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Enrollment in an accredited nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide nursing care per the plan of care: vitals, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, glucose checks, ROM, postural drainage, and 1:1 patient/family interactions.
• Provide direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Provide indirect care: cleaning, linens, restocking supplies, transporting, and clerical tasks.
• Reinforce routine patient teaching and document understanding.
• Assist providers with examinations and procedures; procure equipment in emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aid orientation, participate in behavior plans, provide support therapy, de-escalation, manage aggression, facilitate children’s play, and monitor milieu.
