Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC, seeks a Student Nurse Extern I to join the Cardiology Oncology Stepdown unit for an immersive prelicensure nursing experience. You will work with an RN partner to provide supervised patient care under Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

Role emphasizes learning, patient safety, and hands-on skill development in a 13-bed unit with 24/7 admissions and transfers. The externship supports professional growth and prepares for registered nurse progression.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification listed with NC DHHS.

Responsibilities

• Observe and document patient information; report significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assist with admission, orientation, and discharge; support patient and family during hospital stay.
• Provide planned care including vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, ROM, and basic patient assistance.
• Perform direct personal care (bathing, dressing, feeding, mobility) and assist with activities of daily living.
• Support indirect care tasks: clean work area, restock supplies, transport patients and specimens, and assist in training new staff.
• Reinforce patient teaching and document patient understanding; assist providers during routine exams and procedures.
• In psychiatric settings, support safety, behavioral plans, and de-escalation as directed.
