Job summary

UNC Medical Center is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for the Cardiac Specialty unit in Chapel Hill. This temporary full‑time externship runs May 24 to July 31, 2027, with an RN partner providing supervision and mentorship in a high‑acuity cardiac setting.

Eligible nursing students will learn through hands‑on patient care, assist with admissions and discharges, and gain experience in vital signs, simple wound care, and routine exams under supervision.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start date.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide direct personal care and basic nursing tasks as outlined in the plan of care.
• Support cleaning, stocking, and routine clerical duties in the unit.
• Reinforce patient education and assist with procedures under RN supervision.
