Job summary

UNC Medical Center's Cardiac Specialty unit is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position for nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a high-acuity cardiac setting. The extern works with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice and earns $18.00 per hour in a temporary full-time capacity on site in Chapel Hill, NC.

The externship runs May 24 – July 31, 2027, providing immersive patient care responsibilities and professional growth.

Qualifications

• Fluent in English language required.
• Basic CPR knowledge or certification preferred.
• Strong observation and reporting skills.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Ability to lift 40–50 lbs and assist patient handling.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to RN.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care activities such as vital signs, wound care, and activities of daily living.
• Support care activities under RN supervision and maintain patient safety.
• Assist with examinations and procedures and procurement of equipment during emergencies.
• Support learning and professional development under supervision of RN partner.
