Job summary

UNC Medical Center's Cardiac Specialty unit is seeking an enthusiastic Student Nurse Extern I to support prelicensure nursing students under RN supervision. This externship runs May 24 through July 31, 2027, on a 36-hour work week, onsite in Chapel Hill, NC, within a high-acuity cardiac care environment.

You will work with an RN partner, gain hands-on exposure to LVAD, TVR, TR bands, and pre/post catheterization care, and develop essential clinical skills in a structured externship that aligns

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Ability to organize and prioritize patient care tasks.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs; frequent standing/walking.
• CPR/first aid training as required.

Responsibilities

• Observes and documents patient information and reports changes to RN.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs routine patient care activities (vital signs, measurements, basic care).
• Provides direct personal care under supervision.
• Maintains clean, stocked work area and supports unit operations.
• Supports education and orientation for new staff and students.
