UNC Health Care System is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to join the 2nd Floor Diagnostic Tower team in Chapel Hill, NC. The extern will work under an RN partner and provide hands-on care in a 24/7 environment with a focus on patient safety and learning.

The role emphasizes clinical learning within a prelicensure nursing program, with duties including direct patient care, observation, and routine support activities under supervision.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; enrollment in accredited prelicensure nursing program with graduation within 12 months.
• Fluent in English, both spoken and written; ability to organize and prioritize patient care.
• Basic computer skills and ability to document care.
• Physical ability to lift 40–50 lbs and stand/walk frequently; CPR may be required.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information; report significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide direct personal care and routine activities of daily living as outlined in care plan.
• Assist with examinations, procedures, and procurement of equipment during emergencies.
• Support teaching to patients as documented by the nurse or provider.
