Job summary

Affirm is building its own bank and seeks a Staff Software Engineer to anchor an AI-native team that owns the systems behind the bank, including vendor integrations, data platform, and operational tooling. You will set technical direction, own the hardest problems end-to-end, and drive architectural standards for a startup-like effort within Affirm.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with staff-level responsibilities.
• Ability to own ambiguous, high-stakes systems end-to-end through launch and operations.
• Experience documenting decisions for audit and regulatory reviews.
• Strong written and verbal communication with executives and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for the bank's core systems and surface areas (cloud, data platform, CI/CD, banking configuration, networking).
• Own the hardest problems end-to-end and design clear failure domains, monitoring, and runbooks.
• Lead code/design reviews and establish patterns for a small, high-impact team.
• Ship AI-first capabilities and push the team to use AI tools as a multiplier for code quality and velocity.
• Lead vendor assessment, integration, and ongoing oversight of third-party platforms.
• Define integration boundaries with affirm inc to maintain regulatory separation and enable seamless product work.
• Collaborate with legal, compliance, risk, finance, and internal audit to bake in exam readiness.
• Maintain operational posture: reliability, observability, incident response, and disaster recovery.
• Mentor engineers, participate in hiring, and raise the team's bar.
