Job summary

Affirm is building its own bank and seeks a Staff Software Engineer to anchor a small, AI-native team. You’ll own core banking surfaces, data platform, and integration with affirm Inc, setting technical direction and standards.

The role is remote-first with complex regulatory considerations, and you’ll mentor engineers while delivering high-stakes, scalable systems that serve real customers. You’ll work across legal, risk, compliance, and board-level stakeholders, driving architecture decisions

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with staff-level responsibilities.
• Ability to own ambiguous, high-stakes systems across launch and operations.
• Experience applying AI tools to improve engineering outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Set long-term technical strategy for bank-related systems and data surfaces.
• Own the most complex components end-to-end with clear failure domains.
• Establish code review, design review, and documentation standards.
• Drive AI-first engineering practices and tooling integration.
• Lead vendor evaluation, integration, and ongoing oversight.
• Define integration patterns between bank and affirm Inc with regulatory separation.
• Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit to bake in compliance.
• Ensure reliability, observability, and disaster-recovery readiness.
• Communicate strategy and tradeoffs to executives and non-engineering stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to hiring to raise the team's bar.
