Job summary

Affirm is reinventing credit with a bank-enabled, AI-native engineering team. We seek a Staff Software Engineer to anchor a small, high-impact group that owns banking infrastructure, data platform, and operational tooling behind Affirm’s bank.

You’ll set technical direction, own the hardest problems end-to-end, and push AI-enabled workflows while ensuring regulatory alignment and vendor governance. This role offers significant ownership in a remote-first environment.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software engineering with staff-level responsibilities.
• Ability to own ambiguous, high-stakes systems end-to-end.
• Experience in regulated environments (banking/fintech) and audit readiness.
• Experience with cloud data platforms and infrastructure tooling.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for bank systems, data platform, and CI/CD.
• Design, build, integrate, and operate high-stakes components with clear failure domains.
• Establish code review, design review, and documentation standards for a small team.
• Drive AI-first development, leveraging AI tools to improve code quality and velocity.
• Lead vendor evaluation, integration, and ongoing oversight of third-party platforms.
• Define integration boundaries between the bank and Affirm Inc with governance.
• Create examiners-ready systems with audit-focused design and documentation.
• Own reliability, observability, and runbooks for bank systems.
• Influence executives and engineering teams with clear strategic narratives.
• Mentor new engineers and contribute to hiring and team growth.
