Job summary

CVS Health Digital is seeking a Staff Software Development Engineer to design and operate backend microservices at scale, with a focus on Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and event‑driven architectures in cloud‑native environments.

You will collaborate across product, architecture and security teams, drive reliability with SLOs, implement CI/CD, and ensure HIPAA‑compliant data exchange in healthcare ecosystems.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of overall professional software development experience.
• 5+ years developing backend apps with Java/JEE, Spring Boot and Node.js.
• Experience building RESTful microservices and distributed systems.
• 3+ years deploying and operating services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) using cloud-native patterns (GKE or Cloud Run).
• Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.
• Strong understanding of REST API design, JSON modeling, and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
• Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized workloads (Docker; Kubernetes preferred).
• Solid grasp of security fundamentals (OAuth2/OIDC, TLS, secrets management).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend microservices using Java/JEE and Spring Boot, exposing secure, performant RESTful APIs.
• Implement event-driven patterns using Kafka (producers/consumers, schema evolution, partitioning).
• Model and exchange data using JSON with robust validation and backward compatibility.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with testing, static analysis, and progressive delivery.
• Partner with Security and DevOps teams to integrate automated security controls (SAST, DAST, secrets management).
• Apply 12-factor app principles, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration management best practices.
• Integrate backend services with healthcare data standards such as HL7 v2, FHIR, CCD/C-CDA.
• Ensure HIPAA compliance and platform security including encryption at rest/in transit.
• Own production readiness: availability, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency.
• Diagnose production issues; perform root cause analysis and improve reliability (SLIs/SLOs, error budgets).
• Implement observability (logging, metrics, tracing) for proactive monitoring and incident response.
• Participate in architecture/code reviews and mentor junior engineers.
