Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Classroom Assistant to support students with disabilities under the supervision of a teacher and principal. The role involves one-on-one tutoring, personal care, assisting with daily living skills, and accompanying students on field trips.

Candidates must hold a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from ISBE (60 college credits or approved exam) and demonstrate knowledge of disabilities, basic math, and English grammar.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
• Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of college credit or completion of a paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro).
• Good knowledge of the characteristics of students with various disabilities, English grammar and spelling, and basic mathematics.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions and complete basic written reports.
• CPR training is highly desirable; if not completed, training will be required on employment.
• Good oral and written communication skills; ability to operate photocopying and audio-visual equipment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in instruction of students with disabilities under supervision.
• Provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene support as needed.
• Assist in daily living skills and use of assistive devices.
• Record student behavior and maintain written reports.
• Accompany students on class trips and assist teachers during activities.
• May use approved restraint techniques and CPR if necessary as directed by staff.
