Qualifications

• College graduate or business equivalent.
• 7+ years of underwriting experience or exposure.
• Strong knowledge of underwriting function and John Hancock's businesses.
• Strong knowledge of referral areas.
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical skills; ability to define, research and resolve problems.
• Excellent ability to create and maintain customer relationships.
• Ability to prioritize and work under deadlines with service times.
• Strong grasp of medical science, technology and terminology and their impact on morbidity.

Responsibilities

• Identify and provide solutions to work-related problems (workflow, systems).
• Negotiate and manage time and resources to meet deadlines and service times.
• Provide training and act as an information resource for junior underwriters.
• Process auditing, formal appeal reviews and contestable claim reviews.
• Audit underwriting decisions, correspondence and processing for guidelines.
• Audit medical record summaries per established guidelines.
• Assist management with research projects pertaining to risk assessment.
• Process formal underwriting appeals and complaints.
• Review underwriting fraud referrals for appropriateness and assist with book of business reviews.
• Review contestable claims for potential misrepresentation.
• Maintain good relationships within a self-directed team.
• Project a professional image and mentor junior staff.
• Manage all aspects of underwriting for the most complex cases.
• Serve as SME for junior colleagues and management.
• Assist management with staff training and consults.
