Job summary

Manulife is seeking a Senior Underwriting Consultant for a remote role open to any location in the continental US. You will evaluate high-impact applications, guide junior colleagues, and ensure adherence to underwriting policies while maintaining professional relationships within a self-directed team.

You will audit, train, and manage complex cases, review formal appeals and fraud referrals, and contribute to risk assessment research under minimal supervision.

Qualifications

• College graduate or business equivalent.
• 7+ years underwriting experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of underwriting function and John Hancock products.
• Strong knowledge of referral areas.
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical abilities and problem solving.
• Excellent ability to create and maintain customer relationships.
• Ability to prioritize and work under deadlines with a customer focus.
• Ability to understand and apply current technical information to daily work.
• Knowledge of company plans, riders, benefits and illustrations.
• Knowledge of medical science, technology and terminology and their impact on morbidity.

Responsibilities

• Identify and provide solutions to workflow and system issues.
• Negotiate and manage time and resources to meet deadlines.
• Provide training and guidance to junior underwriters.
• Process auditing, appeals and contestable claim reviews.
• Audit underwriting decisions and processing for policy adherence.
• Audit medical record summaries for guideline compliance.
• Assist management with research projects pertaining to risk assessment.
• Process formal underwriting appeals and complaints.
• Review underwriting fraud referrals and assist with book reviews.
• Help manage, train and consult with staff.
