Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. You will lead protection philosophies and settings for HV transmission/substation projects, and support P&C design reviews and field commissioning.

A strong background in relay coordination, fault studies, and utility standards is essential. You will use tools like SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, CAPE/ASPEN, and Powerbase to manage settings, data, and documentation, while coordinating with multi‑discipline

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
• 10+ years of system protection engineering experience for transmission/substation projects.
• Strong background in relay logic and protection philosophies.
• Experience with fault studies and relay coordination using CAPE/ASPEN or equivalent.
• Proficiency with relay configuration tools (SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, etc.).
• Experience managing protection data in Powerbase or similar databases.
• Ability to review P&C drawings (one‑line/three‑line, schematics, wiring/logic diagrams).
• Familiarity with IEEE/ANSI/NERC/PRC standards and utility practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and capacitor banks.
• Perform short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based protective relays using vendor software.
• Manage relay records and configuration data to align with client standards and change management.
• Support event analysis, misoperation investigations, and recommendations for settings or scheme changes.
• Develop and review P&C design documents (one‑lines, three‑lines, wiring diagrams, panel layouts).
• Provide protection requirements and markups for P&C design (CT/VT ratios, trip/close logic, communications).
• Assist with commissioning, field energization, RFIs, and protection issue resolution.
