Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. This role leads protection philosophies, settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and protection coordination for high‑voltage projects.

Qualifications

• ABET‑accredited electrical engineering degree.
• 10+ years of system protection experience for transmission/substation projects.
• Strong background in protection philosophies for lines, transformers, buses, breakers.
• Experience with CAPE/ASPEN or equivalent protection analysis tools.
• Proficiency with relay configuration tools: SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, and other OEM software.
• Experience with Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases.
• Ability to interpret P&C drawings: one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, wiring and panel layouts.
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, and NERC/PRC standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication with utility clients, manufacturers, and field teams.
• Proven project leadership and multidisciplinary coordination.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers and capacitor banks.
• Perform short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based protective relays.
• Manage relay records and settings in Powerbase or similar databases.
• Support event analysis and misoperation investigations with relay data interpretation.
• Develop and review P&C design documents (one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, wiring, logic diagrams).
• Provide system protection requirements and markups for P&C design (CT/VT ratios, logics).
• Support commissioning and field energization with test plans and RFIs.
