Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. You will lead protection philosophy development, relay settings, and power system studies for HV transmission and substation projects, while supporting P&C design and commissioning activities.

The role requires a strong background in system protection, relay logic, and experience with CAPE/ASPEN and OEM relay software.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent).
• 10+ years of experience in system protection engineering for transmission and/or substation projects.
• Significant hands-on responsibility for relay settings and protection studies.
• Strong background in system protection and relay logic, including various protection philosophies.
• Proficiency with relay configuration and settings tools such as SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, or other OEM software.
• Experience with Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases for managing settings and protection data.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and capacitor/reactor banks.
• Perform system protection studies including short‑circuit analysis and relay coordination.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based protective relays using vendor software.
• Support event analysis and misoperation investigations and recommend settings or scheme adjustments.
• Develop and review protection and control design documents including one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Provide system protection requirements and markups to guide P&C design and field energization.
