Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team in a hybrid role. You will lead protection philosophies, settings, and power system studies for transmission and substation projects, while supporting P&C design and field commissioning.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years in protection engineering, experience with CAPE/ASPEN and vendor relay software, and a strong ability to coordinate with clients, equipment manufacturers, and project teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited).
• 10+ years of system protection engineering experience.
• Experience with CAPE and/or ASPEN for protection studies.
• Proficiency with relay configuration tools (SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista).
• Ability to read P&C drawings and vendor schematics.
• Knowledge of IEEE/ANSI and NERC PRC standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication; client coordination.
• Project leadership and cross-disciplinary coordination.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and capacitor banks.
• Perform protection studies (short-circuit analysis, relay coordination, time-current curves) and verify settings.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor-based protective relays using vendor software.
• Manage relay records and configuration data in Powerbase, aligned with client standards and change control.
• Support event analysis, misoperation investigations, and recommendations for scheme adjustments.
• Develop and review P&C design documents (one-lines, two/three-lines, schematics, wiring and panel layouts).
• Provide system protection requirements and markups for P&C design, including logic and communications requirements.
• Support commissioning and field energization, RFIs, and field questions related to protection.
