Job summary

Carle Health in Birmingham, AL is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to assist surgeons, set up sterile fields, and support intraoperative care across multiple specialties. You will scrub, assist, and mentor others while preparing for a range of procedures and on-call shifts as required.

Qualifications

• BLS certification within 30 days (AHA)
• Education: Associate’s degree or Certificate in Surgical Technology
• Work Experience: Accepts New Grads

Responsibilities

• Preparation for surgeon-specific procedures with timely, accurate, and efficient performance.
• Instruments, equipment and suture must be complete and functional.
• Set up sterile field and be scrubbed prior to patient entering room.
• Organize back table and mayo for the next person.
• Ensure required items are available and accessible.
• Use resources wisely and avoid unnecessary openings.
• Maintain fluid, non-redundant motions and timely setup for various case types.
• Anticipate case needs (e.g., two mayo), collaborate with surgeon before case.
• Precept surgical techs and RNs for surgeon-specific procedures.
• Scrub on simple to complex procedures for various specialties.
• Able to run mayo independently and adapt to surgeon preferences.
• Match technique and style to surgeon and procedures.
• Remain confident and competent in routine and emergency scenarios.
• Prepare for sequencing (clamp, cut, tie) and maintain focus on operative field.
• Proactively identify needs to avoid delays.
• Observe technique and intervene appropriately.
• Perform first scrub, first assist and second scrub roles.
• Complete case closing activities (dressing, transfer, turnover).
• Teach RNs to scrub on a variety of cases.
• Plan and respond to intra-op events with appropriate intervention.
• Remain calm and steady during unexpected changes and high-risk procedures.
• Be prepared for the unexpected and use resources wisely.
• Observe and mitigate risks and protect patient privacy.
• Mentor staff and students in surgical event planning.
• Demonstrate critical thinking and knowledge to raise performance.
• Be available for on-call hours, including after-hours, weekends and holidays.
