Job summary

Block is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Ledgering to design, build, and operate systems of record for balances and transactions across millions of merchants and customers.

You will shape settlement orchestration, enable rapid onboarding with durable APIs, and ensure data contracts are met for downstream finance and reporting teams. The role emphasizes high-throughput reliability, AI-enabled development, and cross-team leadership.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of related experience with a degree, or 6+ years with a Master’s, or 3+ years with a PhD, or equivalent.
• Experience designing and operating distributed, high-throughput services with strong consistency and failure handling.
• Experience building money-movement systems (ledgers, settlement, treasury) or deep domain interest.
• Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or Go and strong SQL.
• Experience leading complex projects across multiple teams and driving next steps.
• High standards for maintainable, testable code with CI/CD and observability.
• Proficiency with AI tools to improve engineering productivity.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate balance and transaction systems of record for millions of users.
• Develop settlement orchestration that determines how accounts are paid and deposited.
• Create self-serve ledgering APIs with durable semantics for rapid onboarding.
• Emit trusted balance and settlement data for downstream teams.
• Build reliable, high-volume distributed transaction-processing systems.
• Drive convergence across a large portfolio of financial services and tooling.
• Operate tier-0 and tier-1 financial systems with published SLOs and debug issues.
• Work with AI agents across the development lifecycle to reduce toil.
• Lead complex projects end-to-end and mentor other engineers.
