Job summary

Block is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Ledgering to design, build, and operate the systems of record for balances and transactions that power Square and Cash App. You will influence the settlement logic, APIs, and data contracts used by finance and treasury teams at scale.

You will lead complex projects, partner with product and engineering teams, and apply AI-enabled approaches to improve developer productivity and system reliability in a high-stakes financial environment.

Qualifications

• Experience designing and operating distributed, high-throughput, fault-tolerant services with a strong understanding of consistency, idempotency, and failure handling.
• Experience building money-movement systems such as ledgers, double-entry accounting, settlement, or treasury, or the drive to develop deep expertise in the domain.
• Proficiency in at least one major programming language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Go) and strong SQL.
• Experience leading complex, ambiguous projects across multiple engineering teams and driving clear next steps.
• High standards for software architecture, maintainable/testable code, CI/CD, and observability in a high-stakes financial environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the balance and transaction systems of record serving as the financial source of truth for millions of merchants and customers.
• Build settlement orchestration that determines how accounts are paid, including schedules, amounts, and withholdings.
• Develop self-serve ledgering APIs with durable semantics and clear contracts for rapid integration.
• Emit reliable balance and settlement data for downstream finance, reconciliation, and reporting teams.
• Operate high-volume distributed transaction-processing systems with thoughtful tradeoffs between consistency and availability.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, finance, and treasury to ship capabilities at scale.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to the technical direction of the team.
