Job summary

Block is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate the ledgering systems of record for balances and transactions, serving millions of merchants and customers. You will help shape how settlements are orchestrated and how funds are moved at scale in a secure, high-throughput environment.

You will develop self-serve ledgering APIs with clear contracts to enable rapid onboarding of new balance types.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of related experience with a degree; or 6 years with a Master’s; or 3 years with a PhD.
• Experience designing and operating distributed, high-throughput services with strong consistency/availability tradeoffs.
• Experience building money-movement systems like ledgers, settlement, or treasury.
• Proficiency in at least one major language (Java, Kotlin, Go) and strong SQL.
• Experience leading complex projects across multiple teams and driving clear next steps.
• High standards for architecture, maintainable code, CI/CD and observability in financial systems.
• Proficiency with AI tools to improve engineering productivity and delivery.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate balance and transaction systems of record for millions of merchants and customers.
• Develop settlement orchestration that determines how accounts are paid: schedules, amounts, deposits, withholdings.
• Create self-serve ledgering APIs with durable semantics for rapid onboarding of new balance or transaction types.
• Emit trustable balance and settlement data to downstream finance and reporting teams.
• Design and implement high-volume distributed transaction processing with thoughtful tradeoffs.
• Drive convergence across financial services with shared models and integration patterns.
• Operate tier-0 and tier-1 financial systems against published SLOs; debug complex issues.
• Work with AI tools and build agents to reduce operational toil.
• Lead complex projects end to end and mentor other engineers.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, finance, and treasury to ship capabilities at scale.
