Job summary

Cenovus Energy is seeking a Senior Staff Process and Technical Safety Engineer to lead Process Safety across US Refineries and support policy development beyond the US. You will guide the US region as the SME and collaborate with Canadian counterparts on Cenovus' PSM strategy.

The role requires 16+ years in process safety, 10+ years in oil and gas, and strong experience with HAZOP, HAZID, and LOPA. You will develop training programs, oversee risk standards, and coordinate third‑party studies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• 16+ years in Process Safety or closely related discipline.
• 10+ years in Oil and Gas/Petrochemicals is an asset; Certification in Functional Safety is a plus.
• Experience leading multiple complex unit HAZOPs and MOCs and translating into SIL requirements.
• Familiarity with API, NFPA, CCPS codes & US regulations; RMP compliance.
• Experience with Fire Hazard Analysis, QRA and facility siting studies; PSM in projects is an asset.
• Legally authorized to work in the US.

Responsibilities

• Lead Process Safety as a competency across the US Refineries—owning methodology development, regulatory and code interpretation, and industry policy representation
• Build and develop competent Process Safety Engineers trained in Cenovus Risk Methodology (HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID, etc.)
• Design, deliver, and maintain a comprehensive risk-training suite for site personnel, including QA/QC of site deliverables and the ongoing development of new team members
• Champion and safeguard key risk standards across the organization (PHA standard, RMP compliance, etc.)
• Directly conduct/coordinate centrally managed third-party studies (Facility Siting, Fire Hazard Analysis, etc.)
• Drive and support assurance audits within the PSM space
