Job summary

AppFolio, Inc. is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Platform Permissions team in a hybrid environment with multiple office hubs and remote options.

You will design and operate the core authorization platform, enabling scalable, secure access control across AppFolio products. Responsibilities include improving permission check performance, building developer-facing tooling, and migrating legacy permissions logic to the modern platform.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to learn to utilize AI for building.
• Depth in Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or the ability to become effective quickly.
• Track record of designing and owning non-trivial Platform systems end-to-end.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform—the roles, policies, and access checks that other teams build on top of.
• Improve the speed and reliability of permission checks as usage grows and set performance/availability goals.
• Build interfaces, libraries, and tooling for other teams to easily add access control to their features.
• Lead migration of older permissions logic onto the modern authorization platform, reducing risk and complexity.
• Contribute to design reviews, code reviews, and written proposals to guide team decisions.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product, security, and engineering teams to clarify access-control needs.
