Job summary

AppFolio seeks a Senior Software Engineer on the Permissions team to build a scalable authorization platform. You will design systems that determine who can access what across AppFolio products, partnering with security and engineering teams to keep data safe and workflows trustworthy.

You’ll mentor engineers, drive pragmatic reviews, and own end-to-end quality with automated testing and controlled rollouts as usage scales.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to use AI in development.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or the ability to learn quickly.
• Track record designing and owning non-trivial Platform systems end-to-end.
• Experience with authorization/security-sensitive systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform.
• Improve permission check speed and reliability at scale.
• Build interfaces and tooling for teams to add access control.
• Migrate legacy permissions logic to the modern platform.
• Lead design reviews, code reviews, and written proposals.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product security teams.
• Ensure end-to-end quality with automated tests and controlled rollouts.
