Job summary

AppFolio is seeking a Senior Software Engineer on the Permissions team to design and evolve our authorization platform that governs who can do what across all AppFolio products. You will build fast, clear, and dependable access controls at scale, partnering with multiple teams to keep data secure and workflows trustworthy.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate with product and security, migrate legacy logic, and own end-to-end quality with automated tests and feature-flag controlled rollouts,

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to use AI for development.
• Depth in Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or the ability to learn quickly.
• Track record designing and owning non-trivial Platform systems end-to-end.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform — the roles, policies, and access checks used by other teams.
• Improve the speed and reliability of permission checks as usage grows and set performance/availability goals.
• Build interfaces, libraries, and tooling to easily add access control to features.
• Lead migration of legacy permissions logic onto the modern authorization platform.
• Raise the technical bar through design reviews and clear written proposals.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product, security, and engineering teams.
• Own end-to-end quality with automated testing and controlled rollouts.
