Job summary

AppFolio is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Permissions team to design and operate a scalable authorization platform that governs access across all AppFolio products. You will implement fast, reliable permission checks, build interfaces and tooling for teams, and migrate legacy logic to the modern platform.

You\'ll mentor engineers, collaborate with product, security, and other teams, and own end-to-end quality through automated testing and observability.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to use AI for development.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript or the ability to learn quickly.
• A track record of designing and owning non-trivial Platform systems end-to-end.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform — the roles, policies, and access checks that other teams build on top of.
• Improve the speed and reliability of permission checks as usage grows and set performance goals.
• Build interfaces, libraries, and tooling that other teams use to add access control to features.
• Lead migration of older permissions logic onto the modern authorization platform.
• Contribute to design reviews and provide clear written proposals for team decisions.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product, security, and engineering teams.
• Own quality end-to-end with automated testing, controlled rollouts, and observability.
