Job summary

AppFolio seeks a Senior Software Engineer for the Permissions team to design and scale our authorization platform, ensuring data safety and trustworthy workflows across products. You’ll shape access control, build interfaces, and collaborate with product, security, and engineering teammates.

The role emphasizes performance, end-to-end quality, and mentoring while driving migrations from legacy logic to modern systems.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Experience with AI coding agents and applying AI in development workflows.
• Depth in Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or ability to learn quickly.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform with roles, policies, and access checks.
• Improve permission check speed and reliability as usage grows.
• Create interfaces and tooling for teams to add access control easily.
• Lead migration of legacy permissions logic to modern platform.
• Promote quality through design reviews, code reviews, and proposing clear decisions.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product, security, and other teams.
• Own end-to-end quality including automated tests and controlled rollouts.
