Job summary

Humana is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to keep the NBA platform healthy, reliable, and scalable for the long term. You’ll work across the full stack—Java, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and data pipelines—to diagnose issues, improve performance, and deliver focused features.

This hands‑on role emphasizes understanding how systems fit together, with on‑call rotation, collaboration with Delivery Pods, and occasional travel to Humana offices. Work is remote or hybrid, typically 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Polyglot codebase; read, debug, and extend code in Java, Node.js/TypeScript, Python, and SQL.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems: APIs, event-driven patterns, asynchronous processing, and failure handling.
• Hands-on experience with observability practices — structured logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting.
• Experience operating services on cloud infrastructure (Azure or equivalent) with containers/Kubernetes and CI/CD.
• Maintenance mindset: prioritize operational health and clean, well-documented code.
• Clear communicator who can explain a system or an incident to engineers and non-engineers alike.

Responsibilities

• Cross-Stack Maintenance — Maintain and support services across the full platform; build and keep current a working knowledge of each component and how they integrate.
• Reliability Engineering — Monitor platform health, investigate production issues, and resolve bottlenecks, failures, and scaling constraints.
• Feature Implementation — Design and ship focused features, enhancements, and technical improvements across platform components, prioritizing clarity and maintainability.
• Observability — Extend logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting so the team has visibility into production.
• Performance and scale — Profile and tune components under load; help the platform scale reliably as data grows.
• Quality — Write tests, participate in code reviews, and uphold engineering standards for production readiness.
• Incident response — Participate in on-call rotation, lead root-cause analysis, and implement durable fixes.
• Collaboration — Work with delivery pods and Decision Intelligence to understand new components and take on long-term ownership.
