Job summary

Humana is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to keep the NBA platform healthy, reliable, and maintainable over the long term. You will gain deep knowledge of the Java/Drools rules engine, React/Node/Postgres stack, Node.js/Temporal orchestration, Kafka backbone, and Databricks pipelines to diagnose issues and implement focused improvements.

This hands-on role requires comfort with a polyglot codebase, distributed systems, observability, and cloud-native operations.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Able to read, debug, and extend code in Java, Node.js/TypeScript, Python, and SQL.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems: APIs, event-driven patterns, asynchronous processing, and failure handling.
• Hands-on observability practices: structured logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting.
• Experience operating services on cloud infrastructure (Azure or equivalent) with containers/Kubernetes and CI/CD.
• Maintenance-and-reliability mindset: treat operational health and clean, well-documented code as first-class work.
• Clear communicator who can explain a system or an incident to engineers and non-engineers alike.

Responsibilities

• Cross-Stack Maintenance — Maintain and support services across the full platform; build and keep current a knowledge of each component and how they integrate.
• Reliability Engineering — Monitor platform health, investigate production issues, and resolve bottlenecks, failures, and scaling constraints.
• Feature Implementation — Design and ship focused features, enhancements, and technical improvements across platform components.
• Observability — Extend logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting for clear production visibility.
• Performance and scale — Profile and tune components under load and help the platform scale with growth.
• Quality — Write tests, conduct code reviews, and uphold engineering standards for production-ready changes.
• Incident response — Participate in on-call, lead root-cause analysis, and convert incidents into durable fixes.
• Collaboration — Work with delivery pods and Decision Intelligence to own long-term components.
