Job summary

Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, TX is seeking a qualified Medical Coder for outpatient and ambulatory coding. You will assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for emergency department, clinics, same-day surgery, and diagnostics, reporting to the Coding Manager.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, RHIT/RHIA certification, and at least six years of hospital outpatient coding experience. Strong communication and analytical skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED required; an Associate degree in Health Information Management preferred.
• Licenses/Certifications: RHIT, RHIA or AHIMA/AAPC credential required.
• Experience/Knowledge/Skills: Six years of hospital outpatient coding experience.
• Additional: Strong communication, ICD-10-CM/CPT knowledge, anatomy and medical terminology.

Responsibilities

• Reviews medical records and assigns ICD-10-CM/HCPCS codes for outpatient records.
• Ensures specificity of diagnoses and procedures for proper reimbursement.
• Queries physicians when documentation is unclear or incomplete.
• Maintains coding accuracy and meets productivity standards.
• Mentors and trains newly hired coders.
• Assists with coding tasks and special assignments as needed.
• Acts as a resource for coding questions and ensures compliance with AHIMA guidelines.
• Upholds safety, policies, and quality standards in coding practice.
